Should I be worried about mould growing in my pitcher/jug?Updated 3 months ago
First, let's talk mould. Mould is part of the natural environment and can grow almost anywhere if given the proper conditions to do so.
One of the most recurring problems with water filters across all brands is the growth of mold and the constant combat of that. Most mould is harmless but having mold in your drinking water could present serious hazards to your health. And of course, if you're using a water filter, your aim is to prevent that. We have some cleaning tips to help keep your water clean and mold free, so you can rest assured your water is benefiting your health and not harming it.
In order to prevent the growth of mould, it is important to follow these tips:
1. Keep your pitcher/jug away from direct sunlight or heat.
Mould grows in the presence of oxygen, heat, and moisture. So keep it away from heat, and you're one step closer to combating the growth of mould.
2. Properly store your filter.
It's important that you don't leave your filter inside your pitcher/jug for more than a few days exposed to air or sunlight. If you're short on time, it's best to keep the pitcher/jug in the fridge.
Otherwise, take out your filter and let it air dry overnight. Then either place it back in the pitcher or store it if you will be away for longer than a few days. We recommend storing it in a ziplock bag and be sure to remove as much of the air from the bag as you can since mould needs oxygen to grow. Then, store that bag in a cabinet or in the fridge so it's cool and away from light.
3. Routinely clean your pitcher/jug.
We recommend cleaning your pitcher/jug once every other week. First, take out the filter and take off the lid and set them aside. Then, clean the shell and reservoir with some vinegar and dish detergent. The vinegar helps descale your pitcher/jug and will also help to prevent the growth of unwanted things. Use a damp wash cloth to wipe down the lid. Since the lid isn't waterproof, be sure to not fully submerge it under water.
Your pitcher/jug will be just fine stored in the fridge for an indefinite amount of time, so you can always store it there if you're unsure of what to do.
Also, all of our filters are integrated with an anti-microbial agent that suppresses the growth of mould, mildew and bacteria, keeping your pitcher/jug filters fresh between use. So in combination with these steps, you will be mold and worry free!
